From September 15 to 17 local time, Bank of China Chairman Ge Haijiao carried out a business survey in Lisbon, Portugal, engaging in in-depth exchanges with political and business leaders on topics such as accelerating the growth of China-Portugal friendly relations and strengthening bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

On the 16th, Ge Haijiao met with Clara Raposo, Deputy Governor of the Banco de Portugal (the central bank). He noted that Bank of China established its Lisbon branch in 2013 as the only Chinese bank in Portugal, providing robust support for bilateral trade between the two countries. Bank of China will continue to follow the important consensus of the two countries' leaders, seize development opportunities, uphold compliant operations, focus on key areas, actively expand product and service coverage, and effectively promote the continuous improvement of China-Portugal relations. Raposo stated that the Portuguese central bank places high importance on cooperation with Chinese financial institutions and hopes Bank of China will continue to leverage its strengths to deepen collaboration in areas such as RMB business, green finance, and capital markets, pushing China-Portugal financial cooperation to new heights.

The Portuguese Treasury and Debt Management Agency (IGCP) plays a vital role in maintaining Portugal's public finance stability, managing sovereign debt, and advancing the development of Portugal's capital markets. On the same day, Ge Haijiao held talks with Pedro Cabeços, Chairman of IGCP. He stated that in 2019, Bank of China supported the Portuguese government in issuing the first 2 billion yuan sovereign panda bond in the eurozone, injecting strong financial momentum into China-Portugal trade and two-way investment over the years. Bank of China will continue to help broaden diversified financing channels for the Portuguese government and promote connectivity between Chinese and Portuguese capital markets. Cabeços expressed hope for further communication with Bank of China and active exploration of cooperation opportunities in areas such as RMB bond and capital market activities.

During the visit, Ge Haijiao also held talks with Miguel Pinheiro, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Millennium BCP, engaging in in-depth discussions on expanding business in China's Hong Kong and Macao regions and Portuguese-speaking countries, as well as deepening connectivity between Chinese and Portuguese financial markets. He also met with Carlos Santos, Chairman of Mota-Engil, a globally renowned construction company, exchanging views on fully supporting the group's global development and intensifying support for the construction of major international projects. Additionally, he held discussions with Yang Yirui, Chinese Ambassador to Portugal, on strengthening the network of China-Portugal economic and trade cooperation and supporting deeper collaboration between enterprises of both countries. He also visited the Bank of China Lisbon branch, where he extended greetings to frontline staff, emphasizing the need to establish and practice a correct view of performance, strive to enhance work efficiency and quality, maintain stable and compliant operations, and better serve the broader goal of China-Portugal economic and trade cooperation.
