The AI lab says GPT-6.1 Terra can cut the cost per token by as much as 50% compared with the previous generation of models.
OpenAI on Monday introduced the latest version in its GPT-6.1 series 鈥?a mid-tier priced model. The company says that compared with the model in the same tier released three months ago, the new version is substantially cheaper and significantly more efficient.
According to OpenAI, the cost per token for GPT-6.1 Terra can be up to 50% lower than the previous Terra-tier model, GPT-5.6 Terra, released in July, as well as the high-performance model GPT-6.1 Sol, launched in September.
The company says GPT-6.1 Terra is particularly good at handling routine office tasks such as drafting proposals and filling out forms, while also supporting video editing.
The release comes as OpenAI is going all out to gain a competitive edge over Anthropic: through lower-priced models and various business incentives, it aims to undercut its rival on price and grab market share.
The Information had previously reported that GPT-6.1 Terra was about to be released.
