A customer in Yiwu, Zhejiang, was left stunned on June 27th after being charged 104 yuan for two buns at a Yonghui Superstores Co.,Ltd. (ASX: 601933) outlet.
The incident, which occurred at the supermarket's Yiwu Wuyue Plaza location, saw an ordinary purchase turn into a bewildering experience when the checkout total displayed the exorbitant amount.
An investigation into the matter revealed the cause was a simple clerical error.
Store management explained that a new employee, who had not yet completed full training, accidentally pressed the weighing scale button multiple times, resulting in the incorrect and inflated price.
Following the discovery, the supermarket promptly resolved the issue with the customer.
The full amount of 104 yuan was refunded, and the two buns were given to the customer free of charge.
Regarding the staff member involved, the supermarket stated that dedicated one-on-one training has been arranged.
Should the employee prove unable to perform the role adequately after training, they will be reassigned to a different position within the company.
The store has also committed to enhancing training for all cashier and weighing station personnel, with a policy to reassign staff who make errors more than three times.
While the situation was resolved, it serves as a useful reminder for all shoppers.
When purchasing items, especially those sold by weight, it is prudent to double-check receipts at the point of sale to catch any potential mistakes and avoid unnecessary overcharges.
