Bezos Counters AI Job Loss Predictions with $41 Billion Bet on New Lab

Jeff Bezos has dismissed predictions that artificial intelligence will lead to mass unemployment, arguing instead that the technology heralds a new golden age of innovation.

The Amazon founder, in a recent interview, detailed his $41 billion investment in a new AI laboratory named Prometheus, which aims to revolutionize manufacturing and engineering.

This marks Bezos's first major venture since stepping down as CEO of Amazon.com (AMZN) in 2021. In outlining the vision for Prometheus, he countered warnings about AI's potential to devastate the job market.

"Those who hastily conclude that all jobs will vanish... I believe they are mistaken," said Bezos, the world's fourth-wealthiest individual.

Bezos is betting that AI will empower his vast portfolio of businesses, spanning space exploration, robotics, logistics, cloud computing, and longevity research. "Nearly every project I'm involved with today is intimately connected to AI," he stated.

"We are currently in the midst of multiple golden ages, with AI being a prime example... along with space exploration, biotechnology, and others," Bezos noted. "The next decade will see a series of disruptive breakthroughs emerge one after another."

He added that his rocket company, Blue Origin, would benefit significantly from technologies developed by Prometheus, though he did not specify their exact functions.

Prometheus was co-founded by Bezos and former Google executive Vikram Bajaj and officially launched in November of last year. The lab has not yet released any proprietary products and faces competition from numerous other startups also developing AI for the physical world.

Meanwhile, in the commercial space race, Blue Origin currently trails Elon Musk's SpaceX. Musk's company is targeting a valuation of $178 billion in a planned listing this Friday, while Blue Origin suffered a major setback last month when a rocket exploded during testing.

The Prometheus lab has raised $12 billion from investors including JPMorgan, BlackRock, and Bezos himself, contributing to an overall valuation of $41 billion.

The lab is focused on developing a general-purpose engineering AI. Unlike the large language models underpinning most current AI products, this system will be trained on real-world data to understand physical laws.

Despite widespread concern that AI will cause massive job losses, Bezos believes it will instead trigger a labor shortage—creating far more new jobs than it displaces.

"Ultimately, all wealth in human society stems from invention and innovation," Bezos said. "Six thousand years ago, someone invented the plow, and all of humanity became wealthier as a result."

Other AI industry leaders hold a more pessimistic view of the technology's impact on employment. Dario Amodei, CEO of AI company Anthropic, has repeatedly warned that the technology his team is developing could lead to widespread job losses.

Amodei's company has received investment from Amazon. In an article published this Wednesday, he proposed raising capital gains taxes to fund a universal basic income as a response to a potential mass unemployment crisis.

Prometheus Lab aims to shorten product design and manufacturing processes and reduce the need for physical prototypes. To this end, Bezos and Bajaj are preparing to establish a dedicated holding company, seeking to raise up to $100 billion to acquire stakes in traditional engineering and manufacturing firms and integrate their data resources.

The lab has already recruited hundreds of specialists in physical engineering and has hired staff away from rivals like OpenAI, xAI, and Meta Platforms, Inc. (META).

A fierce battle for scarce AI talent is underway among major companies. Reports suggest Meta Platforms, Inc. founder Mark Zuckerberg personally cooked soup for a prospective hire from OpenAI to attract them, with other tech firms adopting similar personal gestures.

When asked about this, Bezos said, "If someone wants me to personally cook soup, I'm happy to do it, but no one has made that request yet."

Bajaj stated that top talent would choose Prometheus over competitors due to "Bezos's customer-centric development philosophy" and the team's deep respect for the engineers who quietly build the modern world.

"Our lives depend on these engineers and their boundless creativity," he added.

Bezos acknowledged that tackling the vast manufacturing sector is a formidable challenge. His vision is to empower engineers worldwide to work more efficiently and bring products to market faster.
