The final sugar mill in Yunnan province for the 2025/26 crushing season concluded operations on June 27, spanning a total of 241 days, which is 36 days longer than the previous season. Across the province, the season saw a total of 22.3649 million tonnes of sugarcane crushed (including imported cane from overseas), marking an increase of 4.301 million tonnes, or a year-on-year rise of 23.82%.
Sugar output reached 2.9383 million tonnes, up by 519,500 tonnes compared to the prior season, representing a 21.48% increase. The average sugar recovery rate stood at 13.14%, a slight decline of 0.25 percentage points from the previous season's 13.39%.
As of July 31, Yunnan had sold a cumulative 2.0317 million tonnes of sugar, compared to 1.9514 million tonnes sold in the same period last year. The sales-to-production ratio was 69.15%, down significantly from 80.68% a year earlier, reflecting a drop of 11.53 percentage points. In July alone, sugar sales totaled 199,500 tonnes, slightly below the 200,300 tonnes sold in the same month last year.
Industrial inventory stood at 906,500 tonnes, a substantial increase from 467,300 tonnes in the prior year. Additionally, Yunnan's sugar mills produced 42,400 tonnes of alcohol this season, up from 14,200 tonnes last season, with all stocks already sold.
On August 4, quotes from merchants in the Kunming market ranged from 4,920 to 4,970 yuan per tonne, with ex-factory prices between 4,830 and 4,890 yuan per tonne. Compared to the spot price of 5,820 yuan per tonne in Kunming during the same period last year, prices have dropped by approximately 900 yuan per tonne on an annual basis.
