135 Million Passengers, 4.5 Million Tons! Shanghai Airports Set New Records in Passenger and Cargo Traffic

Deep News01-01

Data from Shanghai International Airport Co.,Ltd. shows that according to preliminary statistics, in 2025, the airport handled a total of 839,000 arriving and departing flights, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%. Annual passenger throughput exceeded 135 million passengers, an increase of 8.3% compared to the previous year, with Hongqiao Airport's annual passenger throughput surpassing 50 million passengers for the first time. Annual cargo and mail throughput reached 4.5 million tons, marking a 7.9% year-on-year growth. These three key operational indicators for Shanghai's airports have all reached new historic highs.

Under the strong leadership of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Government, as well as the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and with the substantial support from members of the Shanghai aviation community—including the East China Regional Administration of the CAAC, the East China Air Traffic Management Bureau, customs, border inspection, police, and airlines—and through the hard work of all staff at Shanghai's airports, Pudong Airport achieved its 26th consecutive year of safe operations in 2025, while Hongqiao Airport marked its 38th consecutive safe year.

In 2025, aligning with the goals of building a high-quality international aviation hub, Shanghai's airports maintained a constant sense of responsibility, firmly upheld the bottom line of safe production and operations, vigorously advanced the green "dual-carbon" transition, deepened digital governance to empower airport operations with intelligence, and focused on building a world-class humanistic image.

Over the past year, in line with the CAAC's "one circle, six corridors, five channels" plan, Shanghai's airports actively supported airlines in densifying their global network. Four new intercontinental destinations were added: Belgrade, Serbia; Casablanca, Morocco; Geneva, Switzerland; and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Notably, the newly launched "Shanghai-Auckland-Buenos Aires" route in December 2025, the world's longest single-leg flight, filled the gap in direct passenger services from Shanghai to South America.

Shanghai's airports also inaugurated their first Central Asian passenger routes in 2025, connecting to Shymkent and Almaty in Kazakhstan, and Tashkent in Uzbekistan. A new route to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, was also added, strengthening the aerial "Silk Road" linking China with Central and East Asia. The airport's route network now covers 302 destinations in 54 countries worldwide, setting a new record for the number of countries served.

In 2025, Shanghai's airports made high-quality progress on the Phase IV expansion project of Pudong Airport, fully coordinated with the construction of the Oriental Hub, accelerated the implementation of industrial projects in the Lingang New Area, and steadily advanced the Nantong New Airport project. The city terminal, "Wanhang International Center," completed its upgrade and reopened with a fresh new look.

Shanghai's airports also launched the "Shanghai Connect, Easy Transfer" transfer brand in 2025, achieving an upgrade in transfer capabilities across all business types and the entire service chain. Young foreign language volunteers at the airports provided enthusiastic assistance to inbound passengers, striving to make Shanghai's airports the preferred choice for global travelers' transfers.

The eight major cargo products released by Shanghai's airports enabled global goods to fly farther, transfer smoother, ship better, and be controlled more stably. The establishment of the Pudong and Hongqiao Airport Hotel Quality Alliances further deepened the construction of the "aviation+" ecosystem, using a diverse matrix of hotel products to extend and secure the airport travel service chain.

The year 2026 marks the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan period. Shanghai's airports will anchor their goals of building a comprehensive, gateway-type, composite international aviation hub, strengthen confidence, capitalize on the momentum, solidly promote high-quality development, and strive to create a Shanghai airport model for Chinese modernization.
