Wind and Solar Capacity Exceeds 40% of Zhejiang's Total Power Generation Mix

Deep News08-06

Data from the State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Company reveals that as of the end of June, Zhejiang's total installed power generation capacity reached 186 million kilowatts, a 12.3% year-on-year increase that outpaced the national average growth rate by 1.5 percentage points. Within this total, the combined installed capacity of wind and solar power reached 75 million kilowatts, accounting for over 40% of the province's total power generation capacity.

During the first half of the year, Zhejiang's economy maintained a stable and positive trajectory, driving a surge in electricity demand. From January to June, the province's total electricity consumption surpassed 340 billion kilowatt-hours, with the growth rate ranking first in the East China region. The peak load hit a record high of 136 million kilowatts.

In response, Zhejiang proactively planned and accelerated the construction of local power sources. Since the second half of 2025, the province has added 20.32 million kilowatts of new power capacity. This includes over 10 million kilowatts from clean coal, natural gas, nuclear, and hydroelectric sources, which have become crucial for managing peak demand and ensuring reliable power supply.

Against the backdrop of achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, Zhejiang is rapidly building a diversified clean energy supply structure encompassing wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear power. The trend towards cleaner power generation capacity has accelerated further. On April 29, Unit 1 of the CGN Zhejiang San'ao Nuclear Power Project, China's first nuclear power project with private capital participation, entered commercial operation, with an expected annual generation of over 9 billion kilowatt-hours. On June 25, the Tiantai Pumped Storage Power Station, with a total installed capacity of 1.7 million kilowatts, was fully commissioned and began generating electricity, projected to provide approximately 1.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. By the end of June, both Zhejiang's nuclear power and pumped storage installed capacities had surpassed the 10 million kilowatt mark, ranking among the highest in the country.

As the installed capacity of wind and solar power expands, the volume of electricity generated from these new energy sources has grown steadily. In the first half of the year, Zhejiang's wind and solar power generation reached nearly 40 billion kilowatt-hours, a 9.6% increase from the same period last year. State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power is accelerating its grid construction efforts. Currently, construction has begun on the Wenzhou and Ningshao substations as part of the Zhejiang Ultra-High Voltage (UHV) AC loop network project. The Yuezhou Converter Station for the Gansu-Zhejiang UHV project has been connected to the Zhejiang grid, with core equipment like converter valves and transformers currently being installed. The company will continue to accelerate major projects, such as the transmission project for the Pan'an Pumped Storage Power Station, to support the commissioning of large clean energy bases and the consumption and utilization of clean energy.
