The oil and petrochemical equipment manufacturing sector, a long-standing traditional industry tied to oilfield development, is a key pillar of the local economy. As the 15th Five-Year Plan begins, this legacy industry is seeking a new lease on life.
Leading with technological innovation, the sector is pursuing a "new" path and leveraging "smart" solutions to build fresh advantages, unlock new vitality, and write a new chapter of growth. A central focus is the pumping unit, the core equipment of oil extraction, with the industry aiming to make it more efficient, intelligent, energy-saving, and safer.
Inside the production workshop of McNess Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd., several of the company's self-developed tower-type, bottom-drive pumping units attract attention. Visually, they are distinct from the common beam-type pumping unit, or "nodding donkey". During operation, the unit can adjust its balance weight based on the actual well conditions, avoiding energy waste from lifting unnecessary weight. Combined with a permanent magnet synchronous motor and intelligent intermittent pumping energy-saving technology, it is conservatively estimated to save 40% in electricity. Additionally, compared to other tower-type pumping units with top-mounted drives, it positions key components like the motor, gearbox, and control cabinet at the bottom, minimizing the need for high-altitude work and making routine maintenance more convenient. Recently, this private company became a candidate for China National Petroleum Corporation's 2026 centralized procurement project for pumping units. "This recognition of our product boosts our confidence and lays a foundation for the company's long-term development," said General Manager Zhang Wei excitedly.
Innovation is the key to the enduring vitality of this "old brand". Companies in the industry are using technological, product, and model innovations to break through development bottlenecks and enhance core competitiveness. Simultaneously, they are building corporate "intelligent brains" such as engineering technology research centers, key laboratories, and pilot-scale verification platforms to provide a continuous stream of power for innovation. At Puqing Drilling Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd., the company established the Heilongjiang Province High-Temperature and High-Pressure Oil and Gas Well Tool Pilot-Scale Verification Platform. This platform has become an "intermediate station" for Puqing's technological achievements to move from the lab to the production line. It focuses on the research and development of core products like downhole tools, packers, and fracturing strings, building a full-chain capability from design simulation, material selection, and process optimization to reliability testing and batch conversion. With the support of these "intelligent brains", several of the company's innovative products have been widely used in major domestic oilfields like Daqing and Changqing. Puqing has also successfully entered the ranks of national-level specialized and new "Little Giant" enterprises. "The platform will continue to strengthen the dual-wheel drive of technological breakthroughs and industrialization, aiming to become a provincial-leading and nationally influential innovation source and achievement transformation hub for oil and gas drilling equipment, providing solid equipment and technical support for the upgrading of the energy industry in Heilongjiang Province, national oil and gas security, and the large-scale development of shale oil," said General Manager Lu Jingmin, outlining the platform's future development vision.
The city is adhering to the main direction of smart manufacturing, continuously enhancing independent core R&D and industrial collaborative supporting capabilities. Focus is being placed on the development of exploration and drilling and completion equipment, with a key emphasis on frontier fields like the development of steering-while-drilling systems. At the same time, targeting the demand for oil and gas gathering and transportation equipment in the national energy strategy, the city is introducing and building projects for high-end sucker rods, pumping units, and pumps. This further strengthens and completes the industrial chain, driving the growth of the traditional oil and petrochemical equipment manufacturing industry and contributing solid industrial strength to a strong start for the 15th Five-Year Plan.
