A recent independent study commissioned by GitLab Inc. has found that organizations implementing its AI-powered platform can achieve a substantial financial return within a short timeframe.
The Total Economic Impact study, conducted by Forrester Consulting, concluded that using the GitLab Duo Agent Platform can yield a 400% return on investment over three years, with a net present value of $7.5 million and a payback period of under six months.
The analysis was based on a composite organization model built from interviews with four GitLab customers, evaluating the platform's impact when AI agents are integrated across the entire software development lifecycle, including planning, coding, and security analysis.
Key Quantifiable Benefits
Forrester identified several major quantified benefits: an 80% faster onboarding time for new developers, saving $582,000 over three years; a 75% acceleration in code migration, compressing an eight-month project to two months and saving $157,000; a 40% time saving for quality assurance and security remediation engineers, reducing labor costs by $1.3 million over three years; and a 20% boost in individual developer productivity, contributing to a total benefit of $7.4 million over three years.
Additional Strategic Advantages
The research also highlighted significant unquantified benefits, such as reduced spending on overlapping AI development tools, improved developer job satisfaction, enhanced cross-team collaboration, and higher overall code quality.
Commenting on the findings, GitLab's Chief Product and Marketing Officer stated that the study validates the core value proposition of the platform. He emphasized that it not only accelerates coding but enables organizations to orchestrate AI agents throughout the software lifecycle within a unified system, helping customers innovate and deliver software faster through comprehensive context and governance capabilities.
