MW UPDATE: Apple may build a fully autonomous electric car with Hyundai-Kia: report
By Claudia Assis
Apple Inc. is close to a deal with Hyundai-Kia to make an Apple-branded autonomous electric vehicle at a Kia plant in Georgia, CNBC reported late Wednesday, citing "multiple" sources who briefed CNBC on the plan.
The so-called "Apple car" is being developed by a team at Apple $(AAPL)$ and would go into production in 2024, although that date could be pushed back, CNBC said.
No firm agreement has been reached between the companies, and Apple could opt to partner with another auto maker separately or in addition to working with Hyundai , CNBC said.
South Korean media reported earlier Wednesday that the Korean auto maker had received a $3.6 billion investment from Apple as part of a collaboration to make electric vehicles. Hyundai owns about a third of Kia stock.
