It is a national priority for China to develop cutting-edge EV and autonomous driving technologies, and to export competitive EVs around the world, as Chinese smartphone manufacturers have done in recent years. Several leading EV makers have already started selling their products in Europe,” Shao said in a client note.The price target on Nio is $34.00 per share with Shao playing down some investor concerns related to the company’s unit growth.“We believe that concern should be somewhat alleviated now that NIO is set to double production capacity at its current factory in March,” Shao added.On Li Auto, the analyst questions the company’s current one-model strategy. The price target is set at $38.00 per share.“We don’t think this strategy will work for LI in the long run. Apple is an outlier in that it can more or less maintain its one-model strategy (we don’t count different colors or memory sizes as different models), while most companies including Ford and TLSA cannot stick to that strategy for very long. The key reason is that Apple is a closed system and thus has the luxury to “tell” consumers what they want or need. Most products fit in an open system marketplace.”Finally, Shao has a $45.00 per share price target on XPeng.“While NIO and LI have 100% company-owned stores to educate potential EV buyers, XPEV has adopted a hybrid approach with some self-owned stores and some third-party dealers that are exclusive to XPEV.
