Amazon.com said it plans to shut its Kindle business in China next year.

The online retailing and tech giant said in a statement emailed to Barron's that it will discontinue its Kindle e-book store in China on June 30, 2023.

Amazon (ticker: AMZN) said it would continue to support Kindle devices. Any downloaded content can be accessed after that date, the company said. It also will offer refunds to customers if they purchased a Kindle after Jan. 1, 2022.

A spokesperson from Amazon said the company periodically evaluates its offerings wherever it operates.

"We remain committed to our customers in China. As a global business, we periodically evaluate our offerings and make adjustments, wherever we operate. With our portfolio of businesses in China, we will continue to innovate and invest where we can provide value to our customers, including Amazon Global Selling, Amazon Global Store, Amazon Advertising, Amazon Global Logistics, Amazon Devices and Services Asia and Amazon Web Services," the spokesperson added.
