Ark's Wood Remains Bullish on Tesla, Says Oil Stock Rally “Defying Logic”

Reuters2023-01-20

(Reuters) - Star stock picker Cathie Wood of Ark Invest suggested the rally in energy stocks will soon end and reiterated her bullish view on electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc in a webinar on Thursday.

Wood, whose $6.8 billion ARK Innovation Fund is up 15% for the year to date, was badly bruised last year by the Federal Reserve's aggressive pace of interest rate hikes that weighed heavily on the sort of technology stocks she focuses on.

Yet the rally energy stocks over the last six months despite the roughly 30% decline in the price of oil suggests that the market is now over-valuing value stocks, she said.

"The market is defying logic from our point of view," she said.

The widely-owned Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund , which tracks the shares of energy companies, rose 1.2% Thursday and is up nearly 40% over the last 12 months.

Tesla, meanwhile, will continue to take market share as global oil demand falls by 30% or more over the next five years, Wood estimated.

The company's recent moves to lower its prices will likely continue "aggressively" and put pressure on other automakers to match them, hurting its competitors "significantly," she said.

"We are as bullish about Tesla as we have ever been," she said.

Wood's ARK Innovation fund fell 3.2% on Thursday while the benchmark S&P 500 fell nearly 0.8%. The fund fell nearly 67% in 2022, leaving it among the worst performing U.S. equity funds tracked by Morningstar.

Most of the battery charging today is via oil and gas conversion.... If we look around the world today, do we see many solar panels linking directly to the charging stations? Woods would do well to see what is real and what is her imagination... My question is will we see ARKK funds run this year? Or will it be next? According to chatGPT, a ARKK fund run will probably adversely affect shares like Tesla (those big ones under ARKK ETF) but the rest of the market should not be affected much.

I was troubled about which direction to take after the recent rally went belly up. But this article has helped immensely. Buy oil and sell Tesla ! Hahaha. Joking..... Actually, maybe not joking. Cathie's bad run these two years has not shown to be turning yet. And coupled with Musk's increasing problem issues (the latest being Videogate), I am not optimistic about Tesla (or other EV's for that matter) for now. The price war started by Tesla is akin to Russia (possibly) using a nuclear bomb on Nato. Please note, this is only my own opinion. DYOD.
