German, Japanese EV Makers to Lag Local Companies in China for Years -- Market Talk

Dow Jones2023-04-27

1343 GMT - German and Japanese car companies are being squeezed out of China's world-beating electric vehicle market by local manufacturers, and will probably trail for years to come, Bernstein analysts say in a note. Bernstein says foreign brands have dominated gas-burning vehicle sales in China for decades but are losing ground in the battery-electric vehicle category, where only Volkswagen is in the top 10. Foreign companies lag behind locals like BYD on popular "infotainment" systems, as well as EV-specific manufacturing platforms, the analysts say. They also list pricing and slow production pace as factors. Bernstein says foreign companies are stepping up but have a large gap to close. "Time will tell whether these products catch on with Chinese consumers," the analysts say. (david.sachs@wsj.com)
