It is possible that the markets have ignored the company's differing financials and decided to lean-in to the negative sentiment.  Long-term fundamentals are usually what drive market outcomes, so it's worth paying close attention.     Particularly, we will be paying attention to Sea's  ROE today.    Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company's management is utilizing the company's capital.  In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.  Check out our latest analysis for Sea  How Is ROE Calculated?  The formula for return on equity is:  Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Sea is:4.1% = US$272m ÷ US$6.6b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023). The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year.  Another way to think of that is that for every $1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn $0.04 in profit.   Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?  Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits.  Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or \"retains\", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential.  Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.  Sea's Earnings Growth And 4.1% ROE  It is hard to argue that Sea's ROE is much good in and of itself.   Even compared to the average industry ROE of 12%, the company's ROE is quite dismal.   For this reason, Sea's five year net income decline of 7.3% is not surprising given its lower ROE.  We believe that there also might be other aspects that are negatively influencing the company's earnings prospects.  For instance, the company has a very high payout ratio, or is faced with competitive pressures.     However, when we compared Sea's growth with the industry we found that while the company's earnings have been shrinking, the industry has seen an earnings growth of 13% in the same period. This is quite worrisome.   NYSE:SE Past Earnings Growth October 3rd 2023 The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth.  It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline).   This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future.    Has the market priced in the future outlook for SE? Sea doesn't pay any dividend, meaning that potentially all of its profits are being reinvested in the business, which doesn't explain why the company's earnings have shrunk if it is retaining all of its profits.  So there could be some other explanations in that regard. For instance, the company's business may be deteriorating.     Summary    Overall, we have mixed feelings about Sea.      While the company does have a high rate of reinvestment, the low ROE means that all that reinvestment is not reaping any benefit to its investors, and moreover, its having a negative impact on the earnings growth.
