If the target is reached, India could potentially produce 25% of all iPhones worldwide and gain more market share by the end of the decade. China would continue to be the top iPhone producer. Apple (AAPL) has been steadily diversifying its manufacturing and supply chain dependence away from China amid Beijing-Washington trade tensions as well as labor headwinds. Indian conglomerate Tata Group is reportedly gearing up to build one of India's largest iPhone assembly plants in Tamil Nadu state, with ~20 assembly lines. Its unit Tata Electronics recently bought a plant near Bengaluru from Taiwan's Wistron, making it the first local company to take on iPhone manufacturing. \"Apple (AAPL) has created an additional spoke in its India strategy by roping in the country's largest business group - Tata - to be a part of its manufacturing system in addition to Foxconn,\" said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India's junior IT minister. Its top supplier Foxconn (OTCPK:FXCOF) has multiple projects in India, such as its planned $1.5B project, a $600M project in Karnataka and a $500M factory in Telangana. WSJ reported that Foxconn is weighing setting up an iPhone-producing megaplant, like the one in Karnataka. Apple (AAPL) is also said to have chosen India as its site for manufacturing lower-end iPhones that will be sold in 2025. It also intends to produce batteries for its latest generation of iPhones in India.
