According to an analysis from Daniel Neumeier of industry consultancy firm LEK Consulting, oncology was the most common therapeutic area to win CDER approvals this year, accounting for 31% of total authorizations. Notable cancer drugs to receive FDA approval this year include Jaypirca, developed by Eli Lilly's (NYSE:LLY); Epkinly, developed by AbbVie (NYSE:ABBV)/Genmab (GMAB), and multiple myeloma drugs; Elrexfio and Talvey from Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) and Pfizer (NYSE:PFE), respectively. Drugs targeted at neurological and autoimmune conditions comprised 11% of total approvals each. That marks a ~51% increase from 2022 when the CDER cleared 37 drugs, the lowest number of novel drugs approved by the Center since 2016. The listing excludes FDA approvals of biologics license applications (BLA). Applicable for products such as vaccines, gene editing drugs, and immunoglobulin products, BLAs are under the purview of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER). According to an analysis from Daniel Neumeier of industry consultancy firm LEK Consulting, oncology was the most common therapeutic area to win CDER approvals this year, accounting for 31% of total authorizations. Notable cancer drugs to receive FDA approval this year include Jaypirca, developed by Eli Lilly's (NYSE:LLY); Epkinly, developed by AbbVie (NYSE:ABBV)/Genmab (GMAB), and multiple myeloma drugs; Elrexfio and Talvey from Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) and Pfizer (NYSE:PFE), respectively. Drugs targeted at neurological and autoimmune conditions comprised 11% of total approvals each. In January, Biogen (BIIB) and Eisai's (OTCPK:ESAIY) (OTCPK:ESALF) became the first to receive an FDA nod this year when the agency cleared their anti-amyloid antibody Leqembi for Alzheimer's disease under its accelerated pathway. This year, the CDER also greenlighted Acadia Pharma's (ACAD) Rett syndrome therapy Daybue and Sage (SAGE) and Biogen's (BIIB) depression therapy Zurzuvae. As for autoimmune conditions, Pfizer (PFE) and Eli Lilly (LLY) won FDA approvals for their ulcerative colitis therapies Velsipity and Omvoh, respectively. With six approvals, New York-based PFE led CDER approvals this year, Its notable regulatory wins include standard approval for its oral COVID-19 therapy, Paxlovid. Biogen (BIIB) and AstraZeneca (AZN) came in second and third with four and three approvals, respectively. Other leading drugmakers to receive FDA approvals this year include GSK (GSK), Bristol Myers Squibb (BMY), Regeneron (REGN), Roche (OTCQX:RHHBY) (OTCQX:RHHBF), Novo Nordisk (NVO), Sanofi (SNY), and Novartis (NVS).
