We regret to report that long term Venture Corporation Limited (SGX:V03) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 32% in three years, versus a market decline of about 7.3%.    And over the last year the share price fell 26%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted.      Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.    View our latest analysis for Venture   While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance.  One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.   During the three years that the share price fell, Venture's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 0.7% each year.   This reduction in EPS is slower than the 12% annual reduction in the share price.  So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy. When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs.  It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend.  As it happens, Venture's TSR for the last 3 years was -23%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier.  This is largely a result of its dividend payments!  A Different Perspective While the broader market lost about 3.5% in the twelve months, Venture shareholders did even worse, losing 22% (even including dividends).  Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments.     On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 1.0% per year over half a decade.  It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
