The organisation’s “associate member” ranks rose from 153 to 227 over the same period.Big multinational miners such as BHP, Rio Tinto and Glencore are not AMEC members, and in some ways, that is the point.“They are the large established players, they have been here forever, and they have significant numbers of employees and a significant economic contribution to make, but they are well heard by government,” says Mr Pearce, of the big companies that dominate the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA).The MCA had 124 members listed on its website on Monday, largely unchanged from 2015.AdvertisementThe MCA declined to comment on AMEC’s rising power, but the Canberra-based organisation arguably had a win of its own last week when Resources Minister Madeleine King upgraded nickel from a “strategic” to a “critical” mineral.Earlier this year, the MCA started pushing for the production tax credits that AMEC had been asking for since before the 2023 budget.The MCA has been heavily focused on industrial relations and climate policy in the 21 months since Labor won power federally, and the strains on the relationship have shown lately.Ms King took to the social media platform X to lash the MCA as “east coast centric” when it tried to link January’s closure of an alumina refinery in WA to Labor’s workplace reform agenda.
