Dow Jones03-12

The number of new zero-emissions vehicle registrations in Canada fell during the fourth quarter of 2023 but still remained more than 53% higher than those seen during the same period a year earlier.

There were 51,156 new registrations during the final quarter of 2023, down from the 56,232 seen in the third quarter, according to data released Tuesday by Statistics Canada.

New registrations in the first quarter of the year totaled 30,533 and were 46,657 during the second quarter of 2023, the data show.

Most of the ZEV registrations in fourth quarter were battery electric vehicles, with 38,528 registered compared to 12,628 registrations of plug-in hybrid vehicles, the agency data showed.

New registrations of all types of vehicles during the quarter totaled 427,886, according to Statistics Canada. This included 322,194 gasoline-powered vehicles and 19,526 diesel vehicles. That compares to a total 457,299 vehicles registered in the third quarter and 346,370 total vehicles registered in the fourth quarter of 2022, the agency's data show.

ZEV vehicles totaled 11.9% of new registrations during the fourth quarter, compared to 13% during the same period a year earlier, according to the data.

In December, the Canadian government mandated that all new passenger cars and trucks sold in the country must be zero-emission vehicles by 2035, with ZEVs making up 20% of new sales by 2026.
