But even in a market-beating portfolio, some stocks will lag the market.   While the Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SGX:Z74) share price is down 17% over half a decade, the total return to shareholders (which includes dividends) was 3.4%.  And that total return actually beats the market decline of 5.5%.      On a more encouraging note the company has added S$2.3b to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.   During the unfortunate half decade during which the share price slipped, Singapore Telecommunications actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 0.005% per year.  Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs.  Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock.  In the case of Singapore Telecommunications, it has a TSR of 3.4% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned.  This is largely a result of its dividend payments!  A Different Perspective We're pleased to report that Singapore Telecommunications shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 9.3% over one year.   Of course, that includes the dividend.     That's better than the annualised return of 0.7% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently.  Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
