But scientists at the University of Florida have built a three-dimensional nanochemical resonator that integrates multiple, frequency-dependent processors on the same chip, enabling more efficient transmission of much larger quantities of data.Better yet, the 3D processors can be scaled indefinitely as data traffic further increases – constituting a genuine game changer for manufacturers and designers in an increasingly congested wireless world.Research published in Nature Electronics.Arctic could be ‘ice free’ within a decadeAdvertisementA new study from the University of Colorado suggests that the first ice-free day in the Arctic is likely to occur within 10 years, much sooner than previous projections. The ice-free season could last up to nine months a year by the end of the century under a high-emissions, business-as-usual scenario.Greenhouse gas emissions are the main contributors to sea ice loss, which has significant impacts on Arctic ecosystems and communities.But there is cause for hope. The scientists note that, unlike the Greenland ice pack, Arctic sea ice is resilient and can return within a decade if atmospheric warming is reversed.Research published in Nature Reviews Earth and Environment.A breakthrough in dementia treatmentMacquarie University neuroscientists have developed a single-dose genetic medicine that halts the progression of motor neurone disease (MND) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD).AdvertisementThe new treatment targets harmful build-ups of an otherwise healthy protein, TDP-43, in the brain and spinal cord, where it creates blockages and prevents normal function. Discovering that these build-ups were caused by interaction with a second protein, the research team was able to isolate a short protein chain that controls this interaction. When administered to mice, it dissolved TDP-43 build-ups and prevented new ones from forming, all without hindering the function of healthy versions of the protein.The drug not only promises to slow the progression of MND and FTD, but may also aid the treatment of more common dementias such as Alzheimer’s, in which about 50 per cent of cases also show TDP pathology.Macquarie University spin-out Celosia Therapeutics is currently seeking investment to get the drug into clinical trials within two years.Research published in Neuron.Native weed could be Australia’s next cash cropEnterprising scientists at the University of South Australia may have discovered a potential new commercial crop in one of our most invasive native weeds.AdvertisementThe team screened 50 native plants in search of a cheaper source of urease enzymes, an environmentally friendly “bio cement” alternative to the cement, lime or artificial soil binders used by the construction, forestry and mining industries.One candidate ticked all the boxes – the prickly paddy melon weed.The study demonstrated that paddy melon enzyme is almost as effective as soybean enzyme, but far cheaper, and researchers estimated a 75 per cent cost saving over commercial lab-produced enzymes.Harvesting of paddy melon could also help solve a costly problem for the agricultural industry, which currently loses about $100 million a year to the weed in lost grain yields, cattle deaths and control measures.
