The shopping event is the first of its kind for the e-commerce giant and is different than Amazon Prime Day in that it is open to all customers, although Prime members will have access to some exclusive promotions. In the leadup to the Big Spring Sale event, Amazon (AMZN) said it would offer up to 50% off select beauty products, up to 50% off select sports and outdoors equipment, up to 40% off select home products, and up to 40% off select electronics. The timing of the sale is interesting in that coincides with the busiest time of the year for Home Depot (HD) and Lowe's Companies (LOW) as homeowners come out of yardwork hibernation. Of note, Amazon's (AMZN) sales promotions for the event include many in the outdoor furniture and lawn essentials categories, which could impact Wayfair (W), Target (TGT), and Walmart (WMT). Other retailers that could lose some incremental sales or be pressured to match prices include Best Buy (BBY), Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS), and Macy's (M). Analysts expect Amazon's (AMZN) Spring Sales to pad Q1 revenue by as much as $1B to $2B, but they also warned that some of those sales could just be a pull-forward from Q2. Overall, the view is that the incremental market share grab will be good for the Q1 margin line. Economists will also be watching the new Amazon (AMZN) shopping event as the timing of the traditional summertime Prime Day has been a small factor with overall forecasts for retail sales and GDP across the U.S. In late morning trading on Wednesday, Amazon (AMZN) slipped 0.46%.
