U.S. demand for natural gas has jumped 50% since 2010, while pipeline and storage capacity have increased just 25% and 10% respectively, which leaves the market vulnerable to wild price swings to as high as $8/MMBtu, Rice said in an interview at the CERAWeek by S&P Global energy conference in Houston. Front-month Nymex natural gas (NG1:COM) closed Tuesday at $1.744/MMBtu, up 2.4% on the day but down 30% YTD. ETFs: (UNG), (BOIL), (KOLD), (FCG), (UNL) Rice has long been a critic of U.S. regulations and the permitting process he says delays and raises costs of constructing new pipeline infrastructure; EQT (EQT) recently agreed to buy Mountain Valley Pipeline developer Equitrans Midstream. The CEO also cited the coal plant closures in the U.S. in recent years; coal plants have traditionally helped keep natural gas prices in check because when it gets too expensive, electricity generators turn to coal for more of their power. \"That's no longer an effective lid on prices,\" Rice told Bloomberg, \"so you can see prices run through that and unfortunately start seeing industrial demand destruction driving price.
