Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 31% share price drop.    Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think Matterport's price-to-sales (or \"P/S\") ratio of 3.7x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United States' Software industry is similar at about 4.4x.  While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment. There hasn't been much to differentiate Matterport's and the industry's revenue growth lately.   Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to show no drastic signs of changing, justifying the P/S being at current levels.  If you like the company, you'd be hoping this can at least be maintained so that you could pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour. The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Matterport's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 84% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance.  So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.     Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 12%  each year as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company.  With the industry predicted to deliver 15% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.  In light of this, it's curious that Matterport's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies.  Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now.  Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.    The Bottom Line On Matterport's P/S  With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for Matterport looks to be in line with the rest of the Software industry.      We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.  Our look at the analysts forecasts of Matterport's revenue prospects has shown that its inferior revenue outlook isn't negatively impacting its P/S as much as we would have predicted.
