ASOS, Boohoo's Green Claims Framework Could Harm Margins -- Market Talk

Dow Jones03-27

1007 GMT - Although the U.K. regulator hasn't found that retailers ASOS, Boohoo and Asda's George breached consumer protection law regarding green claims around their products, it is clear that the Competition and Markets Authority didn't let them off without any penalty, AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould says in a note. "Some of the measures agreed with the competition authority could result in extra costs, which could be hard to absorb for companies operating at razor-thin margins, and they will have to back up any nods to sustainability in labeling and marketing," he says. These measures could also hurt their ability to attract an increasingly eco-conscious young adult demographic, which makes up their core market, he adds. Boohoo shares are up 1.4%, while ASOS shares are down 1.5%. (michael.susin@wsj.com)
