The heavyweight sector, which has returned to some stability, after last year's regional banking crisis and impact from higher interest rates, has been experiencing growth since October 2023, and Goldman Sachs expects a 2% EPS growth in the sector in the first quarter. According to Seeking Alpha's Quant Rating system, the Financials sector has an average health score of 3.58. The system awards grades based on quantitative measures, like valuation, earnings growth, and recent stock performance. The highest possible score for any individual company is a 5. Insurer Allstate (ALL) and consumer financial services company Synchrony Financial (SYF) top the quant chart, with Hartford Financial Services (HIG) coming third.  ALL and SYF have a score of 4.93 and 4.84, respectively. ALL has a high grade in growth and momentum, while SYF scored big in profitability. Last month, HSBC Global Research upgraded Allstate (ALL) stock to Buy from Hold on the basis that prospects for a turnaround in the insurer's underwriting profitability have improved markedly. The insurer, which raised its quarterly dividend by 3.4%, had also beaten both its Q4 bottom and top line estimates.  SYF had beaten its Q4 top and bottom line estimates , and recently announced a new partnership with BRP US Inc. Hartford Financial Services Group (HIG) Q4 earnings had breezed past Wall Street expectations as its Commercial Lines segment saw \"superb\" underwriting results.  MarketAxess (MKTX) bottomed the quant list, with a score of 1.8, as it scored low on valuation and momentum. Last week, the fin-tech firm delivered a 15% lower average daily trading volume in Q1.  The Financials sector is predicted to report the sixth-highest Y/Y earnings growth rate of all eleven sectors for Q1 at 0.7%, according to John Butters of FactSet. At the industry level, three of the five industries in the sector are expected to report year-over-year earnings growth, led by the Insurance industry at 37%, Butters added. The U.S. banks earnings season is officially expected to kick off on Friday, with major banks scheduled to report that day. With market expectations for the number of interest-rate cuts in half since the start of 2024, certain lenders are expected to implement material revisions to their outlook for net interest income to reflect the new macroeconomic environment. \"In general, fewer rate cuts are a tailwind to NII outlooks for most Large Cap Banks and a headwind for several Midcap Banks,” Morgan Stanley analyst Manan Gosalia wrote in a note. \"With the course of rate hikes seemingly having run its course, pressure on deposit costs should continue to decelerate, with several banks likely to post improved net interest margins for the first quarter, and more likely to guide to the same for 2H24,\" said Sean Ryan, VP/Associate Director for the banking and specialty finance sector at FactSet. In a separate note, analysts at Morgan Stanley see money center banks as “a way to play it,” as the capital market continues to rebound. “Our team believes that the money center banks are a way to play this view,” said Katy Huberty, analyst and global director of research at Morgan Stanley, and named Bank of America (BAC), Citi (C), Goldman Sachs (GS), and JPMorgan (JPM) -- all rated overweight. According to a report in March, the financial sector (XLF) also saw the biggest inflows of weekly net buying since August 2021, according to a BofA Securities Equity Client Flow Trends report.
