Factors such as the easing of rates by the Federal Reserve, an improvement in Chinese demand, and the prospects of AI helping with energy demand, among other things, have led to a bold rally in crude oil prices (CL1:COM), which have risen 18.7% so far this year. Stocks making up the energy index have secured an average health score of 3.47, the third highest among other S&P sectors, according to the latest data from Seeking Alpha's Quant Rating System. The system awards grades based on quantitative measures like valuation, earnings growth, and recent stock performance. The highest possible score for any individual company is a 5. When looking at individual components, six out of the 23 companies that make up the index are considered \"buy\" or higher; the rest are rated \"hold\" as per Quant's recommendation, a stark contrast when compared to the 20 “buy” recommendations from Wall Street. Kinder Morgan (KMI) notched the top spot with a score of 4.28 out of 5. The system indicated green for its profitability with a B+ grade, while performance, growth, and momentum for the stock have been rated a C-, C, and a C, respectively.  Diamondback Energy (FANG) secured the runner-up position with a score of 4.26 out of 5, helped by profitability and growth grades, which are rated A and C-. On February 20, the company reported better-than-expected Q4 adjusted earnings, helped by strong gains in oil and gas production. Baker Hughes (BKR) comes in third with 4.23 out of 5. The Quant System displayed that the rig operator has favorable ratings for its growth and profitability grades, which are both B. Earnings are scheduled for April 25. According to Goldman Sachs’ U.S. Weekly Kickstart report, energy, compared to other S&P sectors, is expected to see the largest EPS decline at 27% in Q1. The sector has a 4.2% weight on the overall S&P 500. Quant picks for Utilities The same Goldman report said the utilities sector is expected to have the greatest year-over-year EPS growth at 23%, with a median stock EPS growth of 8% year-over-year. The Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU) saw a growth of 4% so far this year, while the utility index (SP500-5510) is up 3.5%. The sector has a total weightage of 2.3% on the S&P 500. The components of the utility index have an average health score of 3.34, coming in fifth behind Financials, Communications, Energy, Financials, and Consumer, as per Quant’s tracking. 12 out of the 30 names in the index are rated \"buy,\" and 18 are rated \"hold\" by Quant, compared to Wall Street, which has given 24 \"buy\" recommendations and rated the rest \"hold”. Atmos Energy (ATO) comes in first with a score of 4.47 out of 5. The stock is supported by its profitability and growth ratings, which are both graded A. SA contributor Seeking Profits recently wrote in their April 2 report that Atmos is not the type of stock that can keep up with a blistering bull market, but they continue to see it poised to generate ~10% long-term returns. \"As with the tortoise and the hare fable, slow and steady can win the race, and I view ATO as such a stock for long-term investors,\" they wrote. NextEra Energy (NEE) takes the second spot with a score of 4.26 out of 5. The stock has momentum and growth grades of B+, and A for profitability. On January 25, the company reported better than expected Q4 adjusted earnings and revenues and said it expects to grow adjusted EPS by 6%-8% annually through 2026, off 2024 levels. First Energy (FE) bags the third position with 3.99 out of 5. The system showed that the utility has favorable ratings for its growth and profitability. The company is scheduled to report earnings on April 25.
