Several Las Vegas casinos were hit by a synchronized cyberattack last fall by a hacking group known as Scattered Spider. The hack disrupted operations at the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, the Cosmopolitan, and MGM hotels across the country by shutting down slot machines, ATMs, electronic payment systems, online reservations, and disabling digital key cards. The hackers were able to obtain personal information from certain guests including social security numbers, dates of birth, and passport numbers. As a guest of an MGM hotel at the time of the hack, MGM (MGM) alleges FTC head Lena Khan must recuse herself from the investigation as she is a potential witness and thereby creating a conflict of interest. The company also claims that the FTC does not have jurisdiction over the casino in this matter as MGM Resorts (MGM) is not a financial institution and should not be subject to FTC rules regarding identity theft.
