Earlier this week, the Chinese internet search giant said its generative AI chat tool Ernie Bot surpassed over 200M users. Over 85,000 enterprise clients used Qianfan, Baidu AI Cloud's foundation model platform, to create 190,000 AI applications, the company had noted on the sidelines of the Create 2024 Baidu AI Developer Conference. Analyst Miranda Zhuang said that the conference showed Baidu's efforts to boost the AI adoption by lowering the entry barrier, reducing costs, and increasing computing efficiency. Baidu also introduced a set of zero/low-code based development tools: AgentBuilder, AppBuilder, and ModelBuilder which enable people to create AI agent/app/model easily by using natural language in only a couple of steps. Last month, the company released five new versions of Ernie: Ernie Speed, Ernie Lite, Ernie Tiny, Ernie Character and Ernie Functions. Zhuang noted that Baidu advocates the mixture of expert models approach, and the Model Routing technology can automatically direct different types of user requests to the most efficient model. The analyst believes this approach can reduce inferencing cost and response time. For example, when users talk to the new Xiaodu Smart Speaker, simple conversation is addressed by Ernie Tiny, easy request such weather check is handled by Ernie Lite, complex request like scheduling is taken care of by Ernie 4. In addition, Baidu Cloud introduced a new generation of intelligent computing operating system called Wanyuan to improve model training and development efficiency. Importantly, Baidu's Baige Heterogeneous Computing platform supports efficient model training on a mix of chips from different manufacturers. Zhuang believes this technology has a strong competitive moat and could be an effective counter to chip restrictions. Baidu (BIDU) has a Hold rating at Seeking Alpha's Quant Rating system, which consistently beats the market. Meanwhile, the Seeking Alpha authors' average rating is more positive with a Buy and so is the average Wall Street analysts' rating, Strong Buy.
