BYD's Push Into Electric SUVs and Premium Cars Is a Threat to More Than Just Tesla -- Barrons.com

BYD unveiled three new models this week that make the Chinese electric-vehicle maker poised to compete not just with Tesla, but also other auto makers -- especially with a firmer push into SUVs.

BYD's premium Fang Cheng Bao brand showcased two SUVs and a sports car in a livestreamed event on Tuesday ahead of next week's Beijing auto show, where more details on the models are set to be released. The public got an early glimpse of its Bao 8 SUV as well as two concepts: the Super 3 crossover or city-focused SUV and the Super 9 sports car.

BYD, China's largest EV maker, launched Fang Cheng Bao last summer as "a new brand that specializes in professional and personalized identities," and later released its Bao 5 SUV, which the company said has since notched almost 20,000 deliveries.

Fang Cheng Bao represents a bid by BYD to push upmarket, a move that puts it more squarely into competition with Tesla. The addition of larger vehicles to its planned range also makes it look like a competitive threat to American brands that play in SUVs, like Jeep -- owned by Stellantis -- as well as GM's Cadillac and even Ford.

Shares in BYD slipped 0.7% in Hong Kong trading, underperforming the Hang Seng Index, which finished just above flat.
