The media giant is ready to start turning the corner on direct-to-consumer margins, analyst Steven Cahall wrote, and the company's sports business is stabilizing as well. Disney stock (DIS) rose 1.6% early Tuesday in a generally upbeat Communication Services sector. Following in the footsteps of Netflix's (NFLX) monetizing of shared accounts, paid sharing at Disney+ will offer upside to subscriber additions and derisk subscriber sentiment, Cahall said, now expecting core net adds of 4M subs in each of fiscal 2025 and 2026. Meanwhile, the Hulu content now mixed into Disney+ could add some $400M in operating income, and he expects a settlement with Comcast (CMCSA) will resolve Disney's full ownership of Hulu this year. Implied ESPN valuation is set to tick up as well, he said. \"We think sports in streaming will be accretive to ESPN revs, as would be future MVPD packaging with sports skinny bundles and the forthcoming ESPN DTC flagship,\" he wrote. \"With strong sports viewership to boot, we think investors can underwrite Sports seeing domestic top-line growth and stable [operating income] in the medium term, including an expected NBA rights step-up.\" Disney (DIS) has two big to-dos on execution, he said, and job one is improving studio output (the 2024 slate looks good, but also light, he noted): \"We think Disney needs to recapture creative excellence (Shogun on Hulu a good start).\" As for succeeding longtime CEO Bob Iger, while Disney has signaled a short list of its four division heads (Dana Walden and Alan Bergman in Entertainment, Josh D'Amaro at Parks and Jimmy Pitaro at ESPN), it's time for the board to start to emphasize 1-2 heirs apparent, Cahall said. The bank has raised its estimate for Disney's (DIS) earnings per share in 2024 to $4.75 from $4.66 (vs. consensus for $4.69), and boosted 2025 to $5.69 from $5.41 (while Street consensus is for $5.52). Cahall boosted his price target on the stock accordingly, to $141 from $128, now implying 24% upside.
