The S&P 500 Materials Sector (SP500-15)(XLB)(IYM) is higher so far in 2024, notching a ~3% gain but it lags behind the benchmark S&P 500 (SP500).  Renaissance Macro Research took a look at the performance of the materials sector running back to 1960 and outlined its views on a posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. It said a recent scare in inflation and rally in metal prices coincides with typical seasonality for the sector. Prices for a number of metals have zipped higher this year. Copper (HG1:COM) has climbed ~14% as has silver (XAGUSD:CUR). Gold (XAUUSD), widely seen as an inflation hedge, has gained ~13%.  But like in 1960, a presidential election will be held in 2024 and history suggests that has implications for the sector’s performance. “Both presidential election years and off-cycle years see material's performance peak in the spring historically,” RenMac told its nearly 42,000 followers on X.
