Morgan/Getty Images for Airbus/QantasThe companies, which merged last year, utilise a network of satellites that orbit the globe at the same speed of the Earth’s rotation, meaning less satellites are required to provide global coverage.“Post their merger with Inmarsat, we’ve got this great redundancy, doubling up, of satellite infrastructure around the globe. So you’ve got improving satellite technology and coverage, progressively growing and being reinforced,” Mr Capps said.The move away from paid Wi-Fi bundles for economy-class flyers and towards free connection for all is amid changing consumer demand and the need to maintain a competitive edge, the Qantas executive argued.“When we first put it on, it was just a means of keeping connected, very much so for business-purpose travellers who might be going from Sydney to Melbourne for the day, and they might be completing presentations or other work,\" he said.Mr Capps said web browsing comprises about 38 per cent of the activity, while a quarter of domestic customers use Wi-Fi for video streaming and another 15-20 per cent use it for audio streaming, showing a trend towards leisure travellers expecting Wi-Fi connectivity, alongside business travellers.The international Wi-Fi comes as Qantas retrofits much of its fleet, including A380 planes and the newer Boeing 787 Dreamliners, but that has been the source of some delays.“When we acquired the A380s, it was before 2010, the available on-air infrastructure was quite limited, so the work that’s involved in us now taking an A380 and fitting it with the latest gen Wi-Fi is considerably bigger,” Mr Capps said.The first A330-22LR, which operates international routes to Asia and the United States, to be installed with a ViaSat antenna is expected to be completed this week.The airline anticipates installation on all eight A300-200LR aircraft to be completed by the end of 2024.Qantas’ incoming A350 and B787, the former of which will operate the airline's direct Sydney-London flights from 2026, will also be equipped with Wi-Fi.Join the conversationAdd your comment to this storyTo join the conversation, please\n log in.
