Adobe continued its steady drumbeat of artificial intelligence software announcements, unveiling a third-generation image-creation model and adding a flurry of AI tools to its Photoshop software for photo editing and creation.
Adobe has been rolling out new AI software for more than a year now, including its growing Firefly collection of AI tools. It is fighting back against expectations among some investors that AI tools offered by OpenAI and others represent a challenge to its competitive position.
Adobe's new Firefly Image 3 Foundation Model is powering a range of new Photoshop features.
Photoshop is adding a "generate image" feature option, leveraging text-to-image capability to allow users to start content-creation projects without a pre-existing image. Another new feature is "generate background," which as the term implies, makes it easier to create backgrounds behind objects.
"Generate similar" spurs the software to create photo-quality variations of existing images, while a new "reference image" feature allows the creation of images using an existing image as a model for content or style. Another new feature, "enhance detail," fine-tunes images with higher sharpness and clarity.
Adobe says the new version of its Image model produces higher-quality images, with reduced blurring, straighter lines, and improved use of text in images. The updated Image model will be available Tuesday both in Photoshop and Firefly.
