Intel management is confident that the coming quarter represents a \"bottom\" for its profitability, but T.D. Cowen analyst Matthew Ramsay said catalysts are \"few and far between.\" While the recent launch of the Gaudi 3 AI accelerator is a start, it will need \"much more\" to compete with AMD (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA) in the data center space and turn it around. Ramsay kept his Hold rating but lowered his price target to $35 from $42 following the results. Shares slide more than 7% in premarket trading on Friday. Financial results, guidance For the period ending March 30, Intel earned an adjusted $0.18 per share on $12.7B in revenue. The quarter is Intel's first period in changing its reporting structure to focus more on its foundry business. Intel products, which now includes client computing, data center and network and edge, came in at $11.9B, including a 31% year-over-year rise in Client Computing revenue to $7.5B. Datacenter and AI revenue came in at $3B, while revenue attributed to Mobileye (MBLY) was $239M, down 48% year-over-year. The Network and edge segment generated $1.4B, while the company's foundry segment saw revenue decline 10% year-over-tear to $4.4B. For the coming second-quarter, Intel expects revenue to be between $12.5B and $13.5B, well below the $13.61B analysts were anticipating. It also anticipates earning an adjusted $0.10 per share with adjusted gross margins of 40.3% and a tax rate of 13%. Analysts were anticipating adjusted earnings of $0.25 per share. Exasperation continues First-quarter results may have been aided by growth in Intel Products (which is now comprised of Data Center and AI, Client Computing and Network and Edge), but the weak guidance from the group is frustrating, KeyBanc analyst John Vinh said. As such, Vinh lowered his estimates and kept his Sector Weight rating on Intel as he looks for more proof that the company is stabilizing share in the server market and making progress in both AI and its foundry business. Others agreed with the notion that Intel has Intel-specific problems. \"In its core Client and Data Center markets, 1H24 is coming in weaker than management previously expected,\" Needham analyst N. Quinn Bolton wrote in a note to clients. \"Additionally, inventory digestion is affecting the other side of the house; [Network and Edge], Mobileye and Altera. While the company is confident in a 1Q24 bottom and expects to grow sequentially through CY24 and into CY25, our numbers come down on the aforementioned dynamics.\" Bolton, who has a Hold rating on Intel, added he is \"more cautious\" than Intel's management on upcoming catalysts, which may include AI PCs, a shift in server spending back to CPUs and \"cyclical recoveries\" in Network and Edge, Mobileye (MBLY) and its programmable chip unit, Altera. (Intel announced last year that it intends to spin off Altera into a publicly traded company.) Additionally, Bolton believes Intel's foundry business will be a \"significant drag on cash flow and profitability\" at least until the second-half of this year, if not longer.
