Nestle's Weak Start to the Year Will Worry Investors -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-25

0822 GMT - Nestle had a weak start to the year, with organic growth of 1.4% missing consensus by 147 basis points in 1Q, Bernstein analysts say in a note. The miss was entirely in RIG--the company's measure of sales volume--which came in 170 basis points below consensus at -2.0%, they say. "It seems things are going worse than expected." The company calls out weakness in the U.S. and supply challenges, but Bernstein thinks there is enough data in the release to make long-term investors worry about their long-term assumptions. Growth in Nespresso and petcare were both big misses and had negative RIG. Bernstein rates Nestle at market-perform with a CHF105 target price. Shares trade 3.8% lower at CHF90.40.
