The latest move, aimed at controlling the supply of strategic technology, will include scanning electron microscopes, used to analyze nanoparticle images, and gate-all-around transistors, a technology used by Samsung Electronics (OTCPK:SSNLF) to improve semiconductor design, the report added. The Asian nation will also require licenses for shipments of cryogenic CMOS circuits used in quantum computers, and for quantum computers too. These shipments to all countries, including most-favored trading countries South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, will need permissions from export control officials, according to the report. The measures are targeted to better oversee exports of equipment with military applications, and the move is similar to those being carried out around the world, noted the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The change will come into effect as early as July, following a period of public comment till May 25, the ministry added. Last year, Japan expanded curbs on exports of 23 types of leading-edge chipmaking technology. The moves followed U.S. efforts to limit China's access to vital semiconductor technology. In March, it was reported that China was planning to raise over $27B for its largest chip fund yet. China's push for self-sufficiency comes on the heels of U.S. and allies including the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea and Japan tightening curbs on the Asian country's access to advanced semiconductor technology. Japan has also been making efforts to boost local semiconductor manufacturing. Earlier this month, Japan approved about ¥590B ($3.9B) in subsidies to domestic chip company Rapidus. The funding is part of about ¥4T the country has set aside over the last three years to regain ground in the chipmaking arena, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida eyeing ¥10T in financial aid to chipmakers, along with the private sector. The Asian nation has previously pledged billions of dollars for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's (NYSE:TSM) first factory in Kumamoto, Japan, and also to Micron Technology's (NASDAQ:MU) expansion at its facility in Hiroshima to manufacture advanced DRAM. Reportedly, several Taiwanese chip companies have been heading to Japan, not only to help TSM's second plant, but also due to positive signs from the Asian country for the semiconductor industry.
