General Mills Buys Pet Food Company -- Market Talk

Dow Jones04-30

0826 ET - General Mills says it has acquired a premium European pet food company, deepening its presence in the pet aisle. General Mills says the company, Edgard & Cooper, produces one of Europe's fastest-growing independent pet food brands. The acquisition comes as General Mills' pet food sales have struggled, with tough economic conditions denting demand for its premium brands. The company's pet food sales fared better-than-expected in its latest quarter after General Mills adjusted its price points on some high-end food. General Mills did not disclose terms of the deal. Its shares have fallen 21% in the past year. (jesse.newman@wsj.com)
