The China graphite flake +195 EXW spot price was up 1.3%. Note that 94-97% is considered best suited for use in batteries; it is then upgraded to 99.9% purity to make “spherical” graphite used in Li-ion batteries. The spherical graphite 99.95% min EXW China price was down 1.94% the past 30 days. Market conditions for coarse flake natural graphite are positive with constrained global supply and relatively stable demand conditions leading to price support. On April 10 Fastmarkets reported: Natural graphite under pressure from synthetics, amid oversupply, slow trade flows. Oversupply and increased competition from lower-priced synthetic graphite are likely to continue to put downward pressure on natural flake graphite prices over the next few years, sources in Shanghai told Fastmarkets...Graphite anodes currently remain the main anode material for lithium-ion batteries, with synthetic material accounting for around 90% and the natural graphite 10% in 2023, according to sources...Prices plummeted through 2023 and Fastmarkets’ price assessment for graphite flake 94% C, -100 mesh, fob China dropped by 33.43% to $530-575 per tonne on December 28, 2023 from January 5, 2023 at $830 per tonne. And apart from an uptick at the start of January, that downward pressure has continued in the first three months of 2024, with the price falling to $470-510 on March 14 and remaining there ever since.
