1224 ET - North American freight-railroad traffic ticks up 0.5% for the week ended Saturday, as stronger intermodal volumes are just enough to overcome another steep drop in coal shipments. Carloads fall 5.3% on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads, paced by a nearly 26% drop in coal, while the volume of intermodal units rises 6.6%, data from the Association of American Railroads show. Sustained consumer spending and heightened port activity is contributing to the recent gains in intermodal activity, AAR says. North American rail traffic is up 2% for the first 17 weeks of the year, AAR says. (colin.kellaher@wsj.com)
