The carrier, which operates a fleet exclusively of Boeing aircraft, was planning on bulking up its fleet with 46 planes from the Seattle aircraft manufacturer, but now will get less than half of that. And could be left empty-handed on MAX 7 aircraft this year as Boeing (BA) struggles with production delays and regulatory oversight after a series of safety issues. Southwest (LUV) was forced to convert its MAX 7 orders into the MAX 8 model which is too large for some of Southwest’s markets.  Due to the shortage of aircraft, last month Southwest (LUV) said it had stopped hiring pilots and flight attendants.  And the shortage of plans isn’t Southwest’s only hurdle. Last month, the carrier swung to a loss as operating costs outstripped revenue. To offset higher costs, Southwest (LUV) cut service to four U.S. and Mexican airports and implemented capacity reductions at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International. The carrier also plans to reduce its headcount by 2K employees by the end of the year through voluntary leave programs.
