US congressional negotiators strengthen airline refund provision

Reuters05-08

WASHINGTON, May 7 (Reuters) - House and Senate negotiators have agreed to revise language on airline passenger refunds after some lawmakers raised concerns.

On April 24, the U.S. Transportation Department finalized new rules requiring automatic cash refunds for canceled flights when passengers choose not to take a new flight. A bipartisan proposal in Congress released last week said passengers must request the refunds. The revised language makes refunds automatic in many instances but also makes clear they would not apply if passengers are rebooked and accept a new flight.
