Used Jumbo Jets May Fill 'Doomsday' Plane Role -- Market Talk

Dow Jones05-09

1457 ET - Korean Air says it's selling five jetliners to Sierra Nevada, the U.S. aerospace firm that recently won a $13 billion deal to provide new so-called 'doomsday' planes to the Air Force. These are used for airborne decision making by the President and others during conflict. Korean didn't identify the aircraft type. They are being sold for $675 million for delivery in September, according to a regulatory filing. Korean has nine Boeing 747-8i jets, which fit the Air Force requirement for a four-engine plane. Boeing, which has ceased 747 production, is using two secondhand planes in its delayed effort to replace the jets that will fly as Air Force One. (doug.cameron@wsj.com)
