Healthcare REIT Medical Properties Trust (MPW), which recently saw its largest tenant file bankruptcy proceedings, was reportedly the most shorted stock in the sector. MPW logged a short interest of 36.7% as of April-end, with 222.3M shares sold short. Office REIT SL Green Realty (SLG) was the second most shorted stock, posting a short interest of 21.6% at the end of the month. A total of 14M SLG shares were sold short, the report noted. RLJ Lodging Trust (RLJ), Office Properties Income Trust (OPI) and Veris Residential (VRE) ranked highly among the shares sold short. Multi-family residential REIT Apartment Income REIT (AIRC) is said to have logged the largest increase in short position. The REIT saw short interest in its stocks increase by 2.2 basis points to 3.9% of the total float. Rexford Industrial Realty (REXR) logged the largest decrease in short position. Bets against the industrial REIT decreased by 4 basis points to 2.9% of the shares outstanding, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Among subsectors, self-storage REITs saw the largest hike in short positions on a monthly basis, logging an increase of 36 basis points to 2.8% of the total float.
