And yes - I know this can continue. That's why it's important to keep an eye on the iShares Russell 1000 ETF (NYSEARCA:IWB). This fund is designed to track the performance of the Russell 1000 Index, which represents the top 1000 U.S. companies by market capitalization. I say that with trepidation, of course, because my concerns as I have expressed for the last several months center around valuation and concentration risk, where the rising tide is only lifting the yachts and not the smaller boats. Sector Composition and Weighting Again - no surprises here. The ETF is designed to track the sector weightings of the Russell 1000 Index, which means it is heavily weighted towards sectors that have a larger market capitalization. The sector allocations, yes, can shift over time based on market trends and economic cycles, offering investors exposure to the sectors that are leading the market at any given time. But it won't do so in a dramatic way any time soon, given relative weightings being as large as they are. ishares.com Peer Comparison When we compare IWB to funds tracking the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI), it's clear the iShares Russell 1000 ETF offers a broader exposure to the U.S. equity market versus the S&P 500 and a more robust weighting methodology than the Dow (which is price-weighted). While the S&P 500 and Dow Jones focus on the largest 500 and 30 companies, respectively, the Russell 1000 clearly has a wider range of mid to large-cap companies. When we look at the performance of IWB against the SPDR® S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) and the SPDR® Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF Trust (DIA), IWB has outperformed DIA (due to price weighting of DIA) but lagged SPY due to higher concentration at the top of SPY versus the larger number of holdings in IWB. Yes, it's worked, but I'm doubtful for much longer. Conclusion  IWB does what it's supposed to do. Its diversified portfolio, which includes a wide range of sectors and industries, provides a balanced approach to investing in U.S. stocks. While the ETF's market-cap-weighted structure and exposure to market volatility are considerations that investors should consider, its benefits of diversification, liquidity, and ease of trading make it good for core positioning so long as the cycle continues to favor large caps. I'm just not so sure if it will, which is why for me, iShares Russell 1000 ETF is a long-term avoid.
