Applied Materials is set to report fiscal second-quarter results after the market closes Thursday. Here's what you need to know.

PROFIT: The semiconductor equipment company is expected to post a profit of $1.67 billion in the quarter ending in April, according to the consensus of 15 analysts polled by FactSet, up from $1.58 billion a year earlier.

REVENUE: The company's revenue is seen falling about 1.4% to $6.54 billion, according to analysts polled by FactSet. That would be near the midpoint of the company's guidance for $6.1 billion to $6.9 billion in revenue.

ADJUSTED EARNINGS: Stripping out certain one-time items, Applied Materials is expected to post an adjusted profit of $1.99 a share, compared with its guidance for $1.79 to $2.15 a share.

The stock rose nearly 22% in the fiscal second quarter and recently traded around $215.

WHAT TO WATCH

-- A downturn in the broader semiconductor market has weighed on Applied Materials' revenue in recent quarters. Analysts will be closely watching for signs of an upswing in the slumped semiconductor market, as well as how prepared Applied Materials is to capitalize on returning demand.

-- Demand in China is expected to be a standout for Applied Materials, according to UBS analysts. China's strong equipment shipments will likely boost margins for the company, but a reversion to previous shipment levels in the future could dent profits. Analysts say that the strength of business in China could drive better-than-expected guidance for the fiscal third quarter.
