Morgan Stanley equity strategist Mike Wilson now expects the broader market to move higher over the next year, raising his S&P 500 (SP500)(SPY) to 5,400 from 4,500. His bull and bear case ranging from 6,300 to 4,200 is a larger-than-usual skew reflecting macro uncertainty. The uncertain backdrop \"warrants an investment approach that can work as market pricing and sector/factor leadership bounce between potential outcomes,” Wilson said.  Here are 5 trade ideas from Morgan Stanley:  Barbell of Quality Growth + Quality Cyclicals The brokerage continues to like quality across both cyclicals and growth. It recommended a barbell of quality cyclicals, which should outperform in a 'no landing' scenario, and quality growth, which it considers the relative winner in a 'soft landing' scenario.  Among its High Quality Growth list is Schlumberger Limited (SLB) and Sherwin-Williams (SHW). It’s High Quality Cyclicals list included Baker Hughes (BKR) and Occidental Petroleum (OXY)  Consumer Staples over Consumer Discretionary Companies are increasingly focused on offering \"value\" as lower income households pull back on spending. Staples provides some more defensiveness to portfolios as a hedge against an uncertain and unpredictable macro backdrop. Among its recommended stocks were Target (TGT), Dollar General (DG) and Walmart (WMT).  Long Utilities “Utilities offer downside protection in what we view as a later cycle environment, while also offering upside to the AI power theme,” the brokerage said. A drop in Treasury yields through 2Q 2025 should be a tailwind for Utilities valuation. Dividend yields are attractive and payout ratios are high at 50%-70% compared with ~35% for the S&P 500. Upgrading Industrials to Overweight A recent pullback serves as an attractive entry point and an opportunity to formally upgrade the sector to overweight, MS said. Earnings revisions breadth rose during the recent earnings season for all three sub groups—Capital Goods, Commercial & Professional Services and Transports. Also, government stimulus is expected to be more directed toward industrials and fixed investment versus consumer-directed.
