China's industrial production expanded by 6.7% Y/Y in April 2024, above market forecasts of 5.5%, faster than a 4.5% gain in the prior month. Monthly, the industrial output rose by 0.97%. For the first four months of the year, industrial output grew by 6.3% Y/Y. China's retail sales rose by 2.3% Y/Y in April 2024, missing market forecasts of 3.8% and moderating from a 3.1% growth in the prior period. It was the 15th straight month of increase in retail trade but the softest gain in the sequence. On a monthly basis, retail trade was almost flat, edging up by 0.03%, after the prior 0.26% gain. For the first four months of the year, retail turnover grew by 4.1%. China’s fixed-asset investment expanded by 4.2% Y/Y from January to April 2024, missing market forecasts of 4.6% and easing from a 4.5% growth in the prior period. Separate data indicated a further decline in real estate investment for the period of January to April, raising concerns about the effectiveness of China's property rescue plan.  China’s unemployment rate also fell to 5% in April from 5.2% in March. Meanwhile, China kicks off its $138 billion ultra-long bond issuance on Friday as policymakers increase spending on infrastructure projects to bolster economic growth.
