Chinese air conditioner manufacturers will likely absorb the higher copper prices this year to maintain sales as they face high inventories and low demand, Yicai Global reported Wednesday.
Prices of copper, an essential metal in air conditioners, have risen 30% since the start of the year. According to Long Fei, an analyst at ChinaIOL.com, the current inventory available may be as high as 50 million units, the report said.
Analysts expect smaller and medium-sized enterprises will be at greater risk in the current situation, especially if the excessive supply remains in the second half of the year, the newswire added.
In late March, companies such as Gree Electric Appliances (SHE:000651), Midea Group (SHE:000333), and Haier Smart Home (HKG:6690), said they would trade futures contracts to hedge against price fluctuations of raw materials, including copper, the publication added.
